In 2003, Tania initiated a photographic project documenting Japanese
tourists in Yellowknife. The project, entitled "Seeing the Light", will
describe how the Japanese experience Canada’s North, and in
so doing introduce Japanese culture to Yellowknifers. The photographs
will be exhibited at the Northern Frontier Visitors Centre in Yellowknife in May 2004. The annual winter influx of some 8,000 Japanese tourists has become a part of the lives of Yellowknifers and yet little is known about our visitors, or why they come here. The aim of the project is to introduce Yellowknifers to nuances of Japanese culture, explore Yellowknife's appeal, and capture the more private and meaningful moments of the City's famous visitors. The project is being funded by an Arts Council grant awarded by the Government of the Northwest Territories. For an intriguing look at Japanese culture and an overview of the project, click here.
